Re: Salary and car allowance,
Acting Chief of Police
To the Honorable City Council:
The Mayor has suggested that the Acting Chief of Police should
be compensated for the assumption of the additional responsi-
bility connected with his office; and in that connection the
Mayor and I have discussed the matter with Acting Chief Bock-
hacker.
It is suggested that the Acting Chief should receive pay eqUiv-
alent to that of an Assistant Chief; and, while the Police De-
partment roster does not carry that job classification, our
Fire Department carries the classification of Assistant Fire
Chief at a salary of $530 per month. The matter has been dis-
cussed with Mr. Bockhacker, and he feels that for present pur-
poses such an arrangement would be satisfactory to him, in
combination with an allowance for the use of his personal auto-
mobile in City business.
It has been the custom for the Chief of Police to receive an
allowance of $75 per month for the use of his private automo-
bile in the discharge of his duties, the purpose of the allow-
ance being to compensate the head of the department for the
use of his automobile in circumstances where an official car
is not desirable or available as in the conduct of an investi-
gation when it is desired not to indicate the presence of an
official vehicle or an emergency requiring the Chief to leave
his home at odd hours.
It is therefore recommended that the salary of the Acting Chief
of Police be fixed at $530 per month, effective April 1, 1954,
and that he be given a car allowance of $75 per month from that
date.

Acting Chief of Police
