Dear Sir:
The City Council of the City of Vernon, California. respect-
fully submits the accompanying Resolution requesting the establish-
ment of a separate Post Office for Vernon.
Since the opening of the first branch Post Office in this City
in 1926. the volume of Post Office receipts has risen from less
than $8,500.00 to the present sum of more than $1,115.000 annually.
This great increase in Post Office business reflects the vast
changes in the City of Vernon itself - which today is the home of
approximately 1,000 major industrial eoncerns with annual payrolls
totaling more than $351,000,000.
Because our city occupies such a vital position in the economy
of California and the West, and since in all other respects Vemon
stands as a separate, independent municipality, it is our urgent
recommendation that steps be taken at the earliest possible time,
to establish a separate Vernon Post Office.
Copies of this Resolution are being sent also for action and
information to Senator Enale, Senator K\1.Chel, Congressman Doyle,
Postmaster General Day and State Assemblyman Willson.
Respectfully,

Here's copy of letter which I have just received from the Post Office
Department further replying to my expression of interest in the
establishment of an independent post office at Vernon - after receiving
your Resolution in the premises.
I believe you will find that Assistant Postmaster General Belen has
gone into rather full detail and I truly regret to note that "After
carefully reviewing all information, we do not feel we can justify
the additional expense of maintaining an independent post office in
Vernon."
I am sorry.
Let me know at any and all times whenever you feel I can be helpful
to the distinguished citizens of the important City of Vernon.
Kind regards and best wishes.

ASSISTANT POSTMASTER GENERAL
BUREAU OF OPERATIONS
WASHINGTON 25, D.C.

House of Representatives
Washington,D. C.
Dear Congressman:
'rhts refers to our letter of Ma.t:ch 28, and preyious correspond-
ence, concerning your interest in the esta.p1ishment of an independent
post office to serVe Vernon, California, in lieu of the present vernon
ClassifIed Branch. .
The Vernon branch post office provides all services of an inde-
pendent pest of~ice except for postal Savings and documentary stamps.
No demand has peen received for these. patrons may use a Vernon,
California, post office address.
The pos'tal facility is provided with a canceling machine and
die reading ''Vernon, Califot:nia". Hails collected by the carriers
and from the letter drops are pos tmarked "Vernon, California" if
time pertnits. The daily volume of mail so postmarked averages
approximately 2,QQO pieces per d~y. Other collection mail is sent
to the Te.rminal Anne;x and postmarked "Los Angeles, Cal ifornia." in
order to expeditedi~patch.
The major portion of the mail deposited at this Branch is
lI2tered mail. Allo~ the meter users show the pos, tmark of "Los
Angeles, California", and at least 90% show the ir return address
as "t.os Angeles 58, C~lifornia". There have been no reque$ts at
the Los Angeles Post office from a meter user for a ''Vernoo,
Ca1 ifoJ;'D.ia" pO$ tmark.
'rhe revenue of this Branch is received primarily from po~tage
me'j:ers; in fact, less than 25%. of the receipts is obtained from the
sa.1e of stamps to the public.

The new quarters for the Vernon postal facility are nearing
completion. The present facility which houses the Vernon Branch
is designated flU. S. Post Office Vernon Branch,Zone 58, ;Los Angeles,
California"; however, when the new quarters are occupied, that fa-
cilitywill be designated ''lJ. S. Post Office, Vernon, California."
As information, there are 17 stations or branches of the L.os
Angeles post office which have postal receipts ranging from $1,000,000
to $6,675,000. The Vernon branch has receipts of $1,628,470.
The postal service provided the community is good. The post a1
address is the same as the community name. After carefully reviewing
all information, we do not feel we can justify the additional expense
of maintaining an independent post office in Vernon.
Sincerely yours,
}-~
Frederick C. Belen
