A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON EXPRESSING ITS REGRET AT THE UNTIMELY
PASSING OF RAUL R. PEREZ AND OFFERING ITS
CONDOLENCES TO HIS SURVIVING FAMILY

WHEREAS, RAUL R. PEREZ was a member of the Huntington
7
Park City council since 1990 and became that City's first Latino
8
Mayor in 1991; and
9
WHEREAS, RAUL R. PEREZ was a board member of the
10
Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) after being elected by 27
11
Southeast cities to be their representative; served as the
12
Chairman of the MTA Construction Committee and the New Southeast
13
cities Transportation Authority; served as a delegate and a
Transportation Committee Member of the Southern California
14
15
Association of Governments (SCAG); served as a delegate to the
16
Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority; served as an alternate
17
for both Southeast Community Development corporation (SCDC) and
18
the Southeast Water Coalition (SEWC); and was a member of the
19
Huntington Park Traffic Authority; and
20
WHEREAS, the successful operation of local government for
21
the benefit of the people depends upon the concerned leadership of
22
civic minded persons; and
23
WHEREAS, nowhere has such community awareness been more
24
evident than with RAUL R. PEREZ who has been supportive of many
25
civic and nonprofit organizations and was a member of the YMCA,
26
Elks, Lions and the Masonic Lodge of Huntington Park and the
27
Jaycee's and was the president of the Jaycee's Huntington Park
28
Chapter in 1972, thus serving his community in a prominent,

conscientious and capable manner; and
WHEREAS, while serving his community he was able to
accomplish, among many others, the following projects: ELAC
Southeast Satellite Bid for Pacific Boulevard, Police Substation
on the Boulevard, Citizenship Drives, Water Infrastructure Study,
MTA Bus donation to HPPD and a community center, was instrumental
in the first AARP in Spanish nationwide, and his interest in and
knowledge of transportation issues, at the county level, earned
him the title of "Mr. Transportation" as quoted in an article in
the Los Angeles Times; and
WHEREAS, the City of Huntington park has benefitted from
RAUL R. PEREZ' many years as a councilmember, and from the
leadership which he has provided during a time of explosive growth
and development; and
WHEREAS, during his lifetime, RAUL R. PEREZ demonstrated
high ideals of public service, a keen sense of justice, a never
failing courtesy, and was ever interested and willing to cooperate
in all matters pertinent to the public welfare; and
WHEREAS, RAUL R. PEREZ has been an asset to the
development of the City of Huntington Park by his personal
dedication to the City of Huntington Park and its residents, ,an
inspiration to the moral of city hall staff, and an exemplar to
the citizens of the community by his outstanding service to the
community and City government; and
WHEREAS, the untimely passing of RAUL R. PEREZ on
October 26, 1996, raises a chorus of regret from all good men he
has known; and
WHEREAS, the members of the City Council of the City of

1 Vernon individually, collectively, and on behalf of the people of
2 the City of Vernon wish to add their voice to the many who mourn
3
the untimely demise of RAUL R. PEREZ.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
5
CITY OF VERNON AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1: The City council of the City of Vernon, on
behalf of the entire City, mourns the passing of RAUL R. PEREZ and
7
8
expresses its sincerest condolences to his surviving family for
9
their great loss and extends its sympathy to his surviving
10
relatives, to wit: his wife, Rosa; his sons, Raul Jr., and Ryan;
11 his mother, Eva Perez; his sisters, Magdalena and Rachel; and his
12
brothers, Oscar, George and Manuel.
13
SECTION 2: The City Council of the City of Vernon hereby
14 directs the City Clerk to forward a copy of this Resolution to
15 Mrs. Raul Perez in care of the City of Huntington Park.
16
SECTION 3: The City Clerk of the City of Vernon shall
17 certify to the passage of this resolution and thereupon and
18 thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
19 APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 5th day of November, 1996.
