A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON SUPPORTING A SMALL SCHOOLS II RESOLUTION
SPONSORED BY THE LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL
DISTRICT
WHEREAS, the City of Vernon (the "City") is a municipal
corporation and a chartered city of the State of California organized
and existing under its Charter and the Constitution of the State of
(California; and
WHEREAS, on July 19, 2006, the City Council of the City of
Vernon adopted Resolution No. 9097 supporting the City's participation
in the Southeast Cities Schools Coalition (the "Coalition"), a joint
powers authority being formed for municipal governance of Los Angeles
Unified School District ("LAUSD") schools; and
WHEREAS, large overcrowded schools that have limited a
student's ability to succeed have existed in the Southeast for decades;

WHEREAS, research done by the LAUSD has determined that small
school environments accelerate student achievement, provide safer
environments with less violence and vandalism, provide more parent and
community involvement, achieve greater teacher satisfaction and
retention, afford better attendance, reduce dropout rates and achieve
higher graduation and college -going rates; and
WHEREAS, the Coalition supports a broad vision of reform for
LAUSD, including the creation of opportunities for individual student
success and staff development; and
WHHREAS, the Coalition is encouraging support of a resolution

sponsored by Board President Monica Garcia and Board Member Richard
Vladovic entitled the "Small Schools II: A Bold Vision for LAUSD
Resolution" (the "Small Schools Resolution"); and
WHEREAS, the LAUSD Board of Education will be voting on the
Small Schools Resolution on June 24, 2008, and the Coalition is
requesting support of the resolution; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Vernon desires to
support the Small Schools Resolution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF VERNON AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1: The City Council of the City of Vernon hereby
finds and determines that the recitals contained hereinabove are true
and correct.
SECTION 2: The City Council of the City of Vernon hereby
states its support of the Small Schools Resolution and directs the City
Clerk, or her designee, -to send a copy of this Resolution to the
following:
