RESOLUTION NO. 9877
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY'S
SPONSORSHIP OF THE TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION 26 TH
ANNUAL "BUILDING THE DREAM" SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
DINNER
WHEREAS, in 1983, TELACU established its Education Foundationi
in response to crisis -level dropout rates for Latino students in
college (the "Foundation"); and
WHEREAS, the Foundation combines financial assistance with
highly effective programs from college preparation t,,o academic/career
guidance and mentoring to ensure academic success; and
WHEREAS, the Foundation annually awards scholarships to
approximately 600 students and provides educational programs and
services to over 2,000 community residents; and
WHEREAS, last year the City authorized a $15,000.00
contribution for a "Trustees Circle" sponsorship at the 2 5th Annual
TELACU Education Foundation Scholarship Awards Dinner held on May 30i
2008; and
WHEREAS, the Foundation has requested that the City become a
sponsor of the 26 th Annual TELACU Scholarship Awards Dinner on Friday,
May 29, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel (the "Awards
Dinner"); and
WHEREAS, the Director of Industrial Development has
recommended that the City become a "Major Sponsor" at the Foundation's
Award Dinner for a contribution am,ount of �25,000.00; and
WHEREAS, the "Major Sponsor" contribution would, among other
things, award one scholarship in the City's name, allow the City a

full -page ad in the dinner journal, and display the City's logo and
listing in various medias; and
WHEREAS, the City's sponsorship of the Foundation will
assist in improving the public's awareness and understanding of the
City and will enhance the image of the City, which will in turn help
as the City continues its development Of various projects; and
WHEREAS, the support of the Foundation is necessary to
facilitate the further development of the City as well as attracting
businesses to the City, thereby benefitting the citizens, residents,
and employees in the City and the surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, the City's support of the Foundation will assist in
improving,the City's relati onship and the support of surrounding
communities for its various projects which are necessary for its
further development and will create goodwill for the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF VERNON AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1: The City Council of the City of Vernon hereby
finds and determines that the recitals contained hereinabove are true
land correct.
SECTION 2: The -City Council of the City of Vernon hereby
further finds and determines that the Foundation sponsorship is in the
best interests of the City of Vernon, is necessary for the further
development of the City and constitutes a reasonable expenditure of
1public funds.
SECTION 3: The City Council of the City of Vernon hereby
approves and authorizes the City's "Major Sponsor Level" contribution
at the Foundation's Award Dinner and hereby authorizes the Director of
lIndustrial Development to remit the sum of $25,000.00 to the

Foundation and to take such actions as may be necessary or convenient
to carry out and implement the City's sponsorship at the Foundation's
Award Dinner and the transactions authorized herein.
SECTION 4: The City Clerk of the City of Vernon shall
certify to the passage of this resolution, and thereupon and
thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 9th day of March, 2009.
