Resolution No. 2012-043RESOLUTION NO. 2012-43 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON DECLARING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2012 AS "SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH" AND APRIL 25, 2012 AS 44DENIM DAY" WHEREAS, Peace Over Violence is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to building healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence, which since,1999 has organized sexual violence prevention and education campaigns; and WHEREAS, Peace Over Violence has declared April 25, 2012 as Denim Day in Los Angeles & USA and has asked the City Council of the City of Vernon to recognize April 2012 as "Sexual Assault Awareness Month" and April 25, 2012 as "Denim Day"; and WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day are intended to draw attention to the fact that rape and sexual assault continue to be serious issues in our society and were instituted to call attention to misconceptions and misinformation about rape and sexual assault, and the problem that many in society remain uninformed with respect to issues of assault and forcible rape; and WHEREAS, the Denim Day in Los Angeles & USA encourages community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on April 25th as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Vernon wishes to invite all residents and business within the City of Vernon to participate in Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day by supporting the efforts of Peace Over Violence to educate all people in our community about the true impact of rape and sexual assault. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1: The City Council of the City of Vernon hereby declares the month of April 2012 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and April 25, 2012 as Denim Day. SECTION 2: The City Council of the City of Vernon hereby authorizes all employees to exercise appropriate discretion in wearing jeans on April 25, 2012, as a visiblemeans of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault. SECTION 3: The City Clerk of the City of Vernon shall certify to the passage, approval and adoption of this Resolution, and the City Clerk of the City of Vernon shall cause this Resolution and the City Clerk's certification to be entered in the File of Resolutions of the Council of this City. Whitworth, City Administrator RE: Resolution for Sexual Assault Awareness MDenim Day Backeround Peace Over Violence, a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to building healthy relationships, families, and communities that are free from sexual, domestic, and interpersonal violence, is hosting the 13th Annual Denim Day in Los Angeles on April 25, 2012 as part of the nationwide sexual violence prevention education campaign. The organization has once again requested the City adopt a resolution in support of this campaign recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and April 25, 2012 as Denim Day. Recommendation It is recommended that a resolution be approved recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and April 25, 2012 as Denim Day, in support of the Peace Over Violence sexual violence education campaign.
